A large patch of Ruby Chalice clarkia grows on the eastern side of the hill along Bernal Boulevard. It’s one of the last plants to flower in late spring. We’ve planted this annual on our restoration project; and it’s already reseeding and spreading. At least 5 butterflies and moths use it as a host plant.
It’s easiest to grow Clarkia from seed and it self sows reliably. Clarkia prefers a sunny well-drained spot, but it will tolerate shade and clay heavy soils. They die back naturally unless you water them. It produces lots of poppy shaped flowers from June to July.
